    Girls’ Summer Favorites

    Summer is my very favorite time of year, so I figured I share some of my very favorite items for the girls! Most of these things have been in rotation in our house for years and it doesn’t feel like summer without them! Hope you find them helpful as you kick start your own summer! 😉

    Shoes:

    Ok, so I have this thing for white shoes and tan little legs in the summertime! Most think I’m crazy for entrusting my children with anything white, but I just bleach those bad boys in the washing machine and they look brand new! Aside from all the white shoes, a good pair of tan sandals are a summer staple for us! Since we travel so much in the summer, I like to keep our shoe selection simple for easy outfit matching/packing!

    • white athletic sneakers perfect for cheer/tennis/athletic camps
    • White Mary-Jane Sneakers We love these for anytime the girls are going somewhere where sandals aren’t allowed/appropriate (i.e. church, a school day camp, etc.)
    • White Slides lots on the market right now but I find these so durable and easy to keep clean! THESE from Walmart are a cheaper version & look almost identical! Not sure how well they hold up though!
    • Saltwater sandals When we are going somewhere in the summer where shoes don’t need to come off, the girls wear these neutral sandals!2019-06-18_0016

    Swim:

    • Red Swim Suits- I love this big/little sister combo…and the price! 😉

    • Otter Wing Rashguards We love these! The water wings clip on & off of the rashguards making them the perfect transition piece at the beach or pool!  Of course these are not a life saving device and children should always be monitored in or around water by an adult! 😉2019-06-18_0004

    Summer Journals:

    This is something new we are doing this summer! Here are the materials I used.

    • composition books (I love how this one has a space for writing and a space for an illustration on every page!)
    • 3-pack plastic zip pouches I held these together with a binder ring and I chose this method of storing materials instead of tools on a desk because I wanted the journals to be portable for travel! (I filled the big bag with the notebook, the medium bag with pencils, sharpener, colored pens, white out, & a glue stick and the small bag with fun stickers!)
    • pencil pouch (filled with erasable colored pencils & twist crayons -my girls prefer these to regular crayons because they “stay sharp”)
    • Concept: I ask the girls to journal once a day (that’s the goal, anyways!) We set a timer for anywhere from 10-20 minutes and I usually play some music, typically while I am prepping dinner. I encourage them to write about their day/feelings/fears/accomplishments/travels/dreams, etc. I also encourage them to take pictures with their POP polaroid camera and add photos to their journal pages! If you need a list of prompts, I like this one! For kiddos who can’t write yet, ask them to doodle or write out letter sounds and then have them tell you what they “wrote”/drew and you transcribe it on the page for them! Fun Tip: Encourage relatives, friends, camp counselors, etc. to be “guest writers” in the journal throughout your summer adventures!2019-06-18_0006
    • Summer Camera– The kids love Polaroid cameras but the “automatic shoot & print” feature on most Polaroids equates to lotssss of wasted film in our house!  The Polaroid POP is pricey but I love that the images are stored in a gallery for the kids to edit (think: adding borders/stickers, adding black & white filters, etc. Nothing fancy!) and then CHOOSE what pictures to print. The initial cost was steep, but it has saved us a TON on expensive Polaroid film, otherwise wasted on cheaper Polaroids that automatically print blurry/over exposed photos!!2019-06-18_0007

    Stay Hydrated:

    • Hydraflask Water Bottles The kids love the straw feature on this water bottle. I love the simple, easy-to-clean parts and the non-sweat silicone boot that comes on it! Perfect for camps or days at the beach.2019-06-18_0009

    Sunscreen:

    • I’ve been using this Aveeno Zinc Oxide sunscreen on the kids & love it. It has a EWG rating of 1, which means the formula is super clean & low in toxins & harmful chemicals! (The EWG scores go from 0-10, with 0 being the “cleanest”) We’ve also been using the SunBum Mineral Sunscreen (also rated a 1) and the face stick! I have the SunBum Mineral Spray as well. I know we aren’t “supposed to” use sprays, but let’s be honest, sometimes I’m lazy! I find it much less gooey and easier to apply than other mineral sprays!
    • Let’s talk hair/scalp protection. On beach/pool days I typically have the girls wear hats, but when they don’t have their hats on, their little scalps/hair lines are exposed to the sun. So, I’ve been trying out these two products: Coola organic Scalp & Hair Mist spf 30 & Supergoop Poof Powder spf 45  Here’s my review: The Coola is a sheer spray, so it goes on clear, but definitely left the girls hair a little bit greasy (which I don’t really mind, since we typically bathe after a full day of having sunscreen on) But if you were going on a quick outing in the sun and wanted to protect your scalp without needing to wash your hair afterwards, this may not be for you. The Poof powder is a white-ish powder that you spray onto scalp and then sort of “dab” in. I used it in Ardyn’s dark hair and it blended just fine. It did leave a bit of a cakey crust by the end of the day and needed to be scrubbed out in the bath, but did not leave the girls’ hair greasy. I will say, my girls’ scalps never once got sunburn in the Caribbean using either one of these products so I give them both a thumbs up!!2019-06-18_0010

    Summer Attire:

    • Roberta Roller Rabbit Cover Ups–  I know they are a bit pricey, but let me explain why we love these beautiful cover-ups so much. My girls LIVE in their RRR coverups basically anytime a swim suit is involved and every time the girls wear them, I get asked where they are from… so, I figured I would share the method to my madness. I’m a little picky with cover ups and here’s why.
    1. I like them to be a lightweight material-  I’m not a huge fan of heavy terrycloth coverups & neither are the girls. (Especially after a long, hot day on the beach!) I get the girls dried off, de-sanded, throw underwear on them and then they like to put something cool and lightweight on. Sometimes the girls will ask to take off wet bathing suits and wear their coverups for a “break” in the middle of our day…so we like them to be breathable & comfortable. The RRR tunics are 100% cotton!
    2.  I like our coverups to be long sleeves. My girls wear a lot of long sleeve rashguard swim suits so:  a.) I like the coverup to actually “cover up” the arms where you can see their swimsuits and b.) when swim suits come off and coverups & undies go on, I want their little arms to still be protected from the sun. Although I think the poncho style cover ups are SO cute, they don’t have the ahem, “coverage” to work as dresses when we take off bathing suits.
    3. Since we usually go from the pool/beach directly somewhere else, (like out to eat or to get ice cream) I like the coverup to be able to double as a little dress.

    For those reasons, the 100% cotton Roberta Roller Rabbit coverups have become our favorite! They are an investment, so I buy them several sizes up and the girls wear them for a few years before having to buy new ones. I also look for them on Poshmark and our local consignment store. Bonus points for them doubling as cute tops with shorts once they grow out of dress length! 2019-06-18_0014navy stripe | aqua botanical (I have this one in my size!)|pale blue (DY-ing for this one!)|pink | These are the girls’ tunics pictured above– they’re on sale! (and for reference, since these are “tunics” and not dresses, I bought Ardyn a size 8 & Quinlin a 12!)

    • Denim Jacket These are my FAVORITE for summer because they are so light and stretchy! They live in our car all summer and get packed on EVERY trip! Also, a simple white cardigan is a summer staple in our house/suitcase for those chilly beach nights!2019-06-18_0015

    Great Summer Read-Alouds:

    Never underestimate your little childrens’ ability to listen and comprehend a story. I’ve been reading chapter books to the girls since Quin was tiny, and it’s actually my youngest, Ardyn, who picks up on certain things and asks questions about parts I didn’t even think she was paying attention to! These are some of our very favorites!

    Ok, so I have a thing for neutral shoes. Sue Me. 😉

    1 My Tory Burch Miller Sandals have been a fav for a few years now. I prefer the patent version over the leather because I find them better suited for the beach/pool

    We’re baaaaack! And, Holy Moly, you guys- Greece was everything I thought it would be…and MORE.

    Don’t get me wrong, leaving the kids was BRUTAL and I was so upset saying goodbye to them. This was the first time we’ve ever left them longer than one night and the only thing that made it easier was knowing my mom was with them. I did a full post of all the info I left behind for her HERE.

    This 10 Year Anniversary trip [one year delayed…thanks Max! ;)] to Greece may have been better than our honeymoon (in Italy) which I was sure was going to be “THE Trip to Beat” for the rest of eternity. Maybe it’s because we appreciated the alone time alllll these 11 years and three babies later or maybe it was because we had more to miss waiting back at home this time around.  Either way, we had the most incredible time and I’m finally able to sit down and share some of the details with you!

    ATHENS

    We stopped in Athens first because I’m a huge history nerd ( I’m specifically obsessed with Greek mythology!) and I just HAD to see the ruins of Ancient Athens.

    Where We Stayed in Athens:

    • The New Hotel – This is a, well…”newer” hotel, which was kind of funky & modern. Since we were only going for one night, Ryan surprised me and splurged on the top floor room. The balcony off our room was INSANE, with the most ridiculous view of the Acropolis and a bed for sleeping under the stars (There is also a regular bedroom inside.) When we first arrived, I walked out onto the terrace, took one look at the Acropolis standing up on the hill right above me and teared up. I’ve never had that sort of reaction to a place before in my life. It was incredible. If you do decide to stay at The New Hotel, definitely ask for a room with a view of the Acropolis…or try the Grande Bretagne Hotel & ask for the same!

    Things to Do/See in Athens:

    • The Acropolis (get there EARLY & make this your first stop) the crowds and lines get cray-cray later in the day. Also, bonus of hiring a tour guide: they’ll purchase your entrance tix in advance so you can skip the lines!
    • Ancient Agora
    • Plato’s Academy (we just viewed this from the street through the fence and our tour guide told us all about it from there. They actually just recently discovered this site in the 1990s! How crazy is that?!)
    • Temple of Olympian Zeus
    • Arch of Hadrian (built in 131AD, it marks where emperor Hadrian divided the city between ancient Greek city and his new “Roman” city)
    • Roman Forum & Tower of the Winds
    • The Acropolis Museum
    • Syntagma Square – watch the changing of the guards 5 minutes before the top of each hour! It’s pretty intense!

    Where We Ate in Athens:

    • GB Roof Garden– the rooftop restaurant at the Grande Bretagne Hotel with the most amazing view of the Acropolis!

    Tips for Athens:

    1. Hire a guide. There are lots of reasonable group tours but if you have group anxiety and claustrophobia like me, hire a private guide. We used Micheal’s Amazing Tours. Our guide was Matina and she was great! It was about 330 euro for a full day (about 5 hours) AND that price included a driver who brought us to all the “hot spots”, waited for us to finish touring with the guide, and then drove us by some other popular tourist attractions and gave us “drive by tours” PLUS a lift to the airport afterward!
    2. Research the history before you go. Your eyes won’t appreciate what they are seeing unless they know the story that goes along with it. I purchased the following guide book: Rick Steves Pocket Athens. It was super helpful!  If you love to read, I also suggest picking up a great novel to get you in the spirit of the country. I loved Helen of Troy by Margaret George as well as Circe by Madeline Miller! And since I’m such a nerd, I also reviewed The Mythology Handbook, from the children’s section as a quick refresher guide on my Greek mythology. I can’t even tell you how helpful it was to go into this trip with such a great understanding of the rich history. Made me appreciate it, ten-fold!
    3. I really don’t think you need more than one day in Athens. If you are a HUGE history buff, maybe give yourself two days so you can see all the museums, etc. Otherwise, one night at a hotel with an Acropolis view, and one day touring is all you need! 😉

    MYKONOS

    Next, we took a short flight over to Mykonos where all of my Athens-born Greek obsessions became completely cemented in stone…or should I say, pentelic marble! 😉  This place was UN-Real! They say Mykonos is “where you go to party”, but coming from me (grandma, party-of-one) believe me, you do NOT have to be a big party person to enjoy Mykonos! In fact, it might have been our favorite stop in Greece!

    Where we stayed in Mykonos:

    • Mykonos Blu– This place was gorgeous and right ON the beach, There was a main pool, a beautiful restaurant and bar, and we also had a private pool & grass area attached to our room. It was about a 10-15 minute drive into the town, but we preferred to stay on the beach and drive into town at night as opposed to staying on the other side of the island and having to cart beach stuff back and forth to get to the best beaches every day. Picture everything you’d imagine in a Greece resort: white buildings, bright pink bougainvillea climbing up every wall, and blue ocean views around every turn! And can I just say- the service everywhere we went was IMPECCABLE! Ah- take me back!

    Things to do/see in Mykonos:

    • Boat Day- we chartered a boat one day and it was incredible! They toured us around some of the other nearby islands, parked us in a gorgeous cove to swim & snorkle, and fed us an amazing home-cooked Greek lunch on board. It was SUCH a fun day & an incredible way to see the tiny surrounding islands. We booked through Mykonos Luxury Motor.
    • Mykonos Town– Mykonos town is completely and utterly charming. Everything is white…even the cobblestone ground! There are gorgeous flowers everywhere and some of the most incredible shops every.
    • Island of Delos– I had NEVER heard of this Island until we cruised past it on our boat day. We immediately asked to be dropped off and I’m SO glad we did. Delos is one of the most important mythological, historical, and archaeological sites in all of Greece. Guys, this place was MIND. BLOWING. The ancient remains of an entire city- covering the whole tiny island, with no crowds, no ropes, no one “policing” what you touch or do. It was literally like stepping back in time. Ryan and I walked the island (in a rush) and took 1.5 hours. I could’ve stayed all day- the only thing I didn’t like was that I hadn’t done my research and without a tour guide (the map was difficult to navigate) I sort of had no idea what I was looking at. I wished, so badly that I knew all the history so I could’ve really appreciated the raw, ancient ruins we were viewing, touching and walking over…because they were pretty damn incredible! Probably one of my top-five favorite things we did in Greece!
    • Little Venice (home to the infamous & adorable “Petros the Pelican”) Little Venice is on the opposite side of Mykonos town from the shops, on the same side as the windmills. It is right on the water and has the quaintest little cafes where you can sit, have a coffee and watch the little waves splash right at your feet. Also, you might catch a glimpse of Petros. This famous pink pelican roams the cobblestone streets of Little Venice, and he is pink and damn proud of it!
    • Windmills- Ask your driver to drop you off here, have a quick photo stop in front of them and then, when facing the ocean, turn right and make your way down into Little Venice.
    • Anna Maria Mazaraki – This was my favorite little jewelry shop in Mykonos! It’s trendy and cute, but also amazing quality (so it can get a bit pricey!) I bought my “evil eye” bracelet here and have not taken it off since we returned. I also bought one for my mom as a “thank you” present for watching our babes!
    • Nammos Village & Beach Club – So let’s just say you DO like to party…this would be the place to go. They have a brand new village with super high-end shopping and the beach club is very reminiscent of the famous Nikki Beach clubs. There’s loud music, bottle service at your beach chair, scantily clad humans dancing, drinking…and probably making out right next to you! Ha! We ran into a work friend of Ryan’s here so we had some rosè and hung out for a few hours, but let’s just say…me and my mom-bod-one-piece didn’t quite fit in! 😉

    Where we ate in Mykonos:

    • M.eating– This place was highly recommended so we went here first. The menu looked great but we got shoved in an awkward table: inside, in the back, right next to the waiter’s station… and I just wasn’t feeling it, not with so many other gorgeous options out there! So, we left. If you go here, be sure to ask for an outdoor “street-side” table! (Keep in mind, by “street” I mean “sidewalk”…there are no cars in this tiny, gorgeous village.
    • Familia– a cute little Italian joint. We ate here after we left m.eating, mainly because it looked so pretty and we were able to get a good table right on the sidewalk. The food was good, nothing crazy- but then again, I’m pretty much the most basic eater ever!
    • Interni– This place was INSANE! Be sure to get a reservation…the food, drinks, and atmosphere were so good!
    • Remezzo– We went here on our last night and it was just gorgeous. Ask to sit outside on the patio, on the edge, nearest to the water. From here you can watch the sunset and the food is absolutely delicious!

    Tips for Mykonos:

    1. Mykonos town has two main sections: the souvenir street and the high-end street. We didn’t discover that we had missed all the high-end shops until night two and my joy was about as great as ryan’s anxiety at this discovery. Haha…just kidding. I think he loved window shopping as much as I did!
    2. There are like 30 taxis on the whole island. Ask your concierge to use the house car if possible. If they don’t have a house car or it isn’t available, ask them to book you a private driver.  It sounds expensive, but they have a a flat rate and they only run a few euro above what the taxi costs. (it’s basically like an uber)
    3. Make sure you come with Euros! You’ll need to tip your drivers and a few of the little shops only take cash. Most of the big stores take credit cards and will give you the option of being charged in Euro or USD. (We always chose to charge in Euro to get the best exchange rate!)
    4. Be sure to stop for some crepes or gelato in town!

    SANTORINI

    We were gutted to leave Mykonos but so excited to see what everyone was dubbing “The Best Place in Greece”: Santorini. We took the Minoan Line Ferry (The High Speed 7/ The Santorini Palace). We heard rumors while we were there about “the other ferry” (can’t remember its name) and heard it was a nightmare experience so we were glad our tickets happened to be for the other one…because we knew no different when booking! Ha! Santorini, in a nutshell was gorgeous and we had a blast. It took us a bit to come around to it I think- mainly because we were expecting it to blow Mykonos out of the water right off the bat. Don’t get me wrong- by the end of the trip we fell in absolute LOVE with Santorini and would go back in a heartbeat. However, I wouldn’t say it was better than Mykonos…just different. People say you “go to Mykonos to party and Santorini to relax” but we had a very relaxing stay in Mykonos and were pretty busy in Santorini! I guess each city is just what you make of it! Love, love, love them both!

    Where we stayed:

    • Katakies  -Fist off you should note there are three main areas to stay in Santorinini:
    1. Fira- the capital; lots of night life, shopping, restaurant, night clubs
    2. Akrotiri- off the beaten path and pretty much far away from everything
    3. Oia- known for it’s picturesque views, famous sunsets, and quaint village

    We chose Oia (pronounced “ee-yah”) and I’m so glad we did. The village did get crowded- especially when the cruise ships came in- but if we wanted peace and quiet, we just retreated to our hotel pool! Each hotel on the main strip in Oia has guards standing at the entrance of the downward staircases, so unless you are staying there, you can’t get in. It keeps all the hotels nice and peaceful and quiet even when the main strip above is jam-packed. I highly recommend staying in Oia. It was the village where we spent most of our time (so it saved on many cab rides!) and I found it to be much more picturesque than Fira. I can’t speak about Akrotiri…because we never had any reason to go there, although I hear it’s peaceful and beautiful!

    Things to do/see in Santorini:

    • Sunset Cruise- we booked what we thought was a sunset CATAMARAN cruise but when we showed up it was a beautiful boat, instead. Ummm…SCORE! The crew was incredible and so knowledgeable! The toured us around the entire island/caldera of Santorini and gave us the most interesting history tid-bits along the way! They parked us near the sulfur hot springs at the volcano but we opted out of going for a dip. It stunk pretty bad and the water was bright orange….and hello, white bathing suit! They also cooked us an amazing dinner on board and then parked the boat for a front-and-center view of the sunset on the water. Absolutely insane! One of my favorite days in Santorini! We booked through Sunset Oia.
    • Hike from Fira to Oia– This day was SO. MUCH. FUN! We took a cab from Oia to Fira, did some carb-loading at a nearby bakery and then started the 6+ mile hike over the mountains back home to Oia! We stopped to climb to the top of Skaros Rock along the way (which took a little over an hour), stopped at a little snack shack on the side of the mountain for a water and beer break, and even rode some donkeys up one of the mountains. We didn’t think we would make it and discussed getting a taxi at certain points but I think we were both determined to say we did it. It was such a amazing, gorgeous, bonding experience. I’d do it again in a heart beat…maybe just bring better hiking shoes next time! (aka NOT converse!) 😉
    • Spa– We booked a couples massage at our hotel after our hike and- Honey, did it feel GOOOOD after that day of climbing and sweating!
    • Pool/Lounge– Santorini is known for being relaxing so don’t forget to do just that! Our hotel’s infinity pool overlooking the cliffs of Oia was insane! We came here anytime we had some downtime to relax. The service was impeccable and the food, drinks, and view were out of this world!
    • Oia Shopping/Photo Opps– Get up early and go explore the village of Oia before the crowds hit! It’s so beautiful- and just keep walking, it gets better the further down you go! The first night we only walked a tiny bit down the main strip and thought it was too “new and modern” and made us miss the quaintness of Mykonos Town, but the next day we pushed further into Oia and came to love it the further down the main strip we walked!
    • The Blue Domed Cathedral– The famous three-domed blue cathedral of Santorini is pretty tricky to get to so let me help you out. First of all, there are blue domed cathedrals EVERYWHERE, but “THE” famous one is in Oia. When you get dropped off at the entrance of Oia (it just looks like a giant sidewalk with shops and hotels on either side. No cars- all pedestrian traffic) walk straight down the strip until you hit the Main Square. You’ll know it’s the main square because the narrow sidewalk will open up to a courtyard on your right with a big cathedral and lots of people stopping to take pictures. Keep walking! Right after the main square you’ll see a sign on your left for a shop called “Alexandros” (if you hit our little lunch spot, Melenio [see below], then you’ve gone too far). At the “Alexandros” sign, turn left down the narrow path. Go down the stairs. You’ll see a “fork in the road” at the bottom of the stairs, turn right and there, in front of you, is the picture perfect postcard view of the famous three domed cathedral!
    • Atlantis Bookshop- Ranked one of the best book stores in the world. It’s so quaint and filled with treasures! The CC machine was broken while we were there…which was probably a good thing because we (…I!) would’ve spent waaaay too much on antique collector books!
    • Fish Pedicures– We skipped this, but they are all over town! Get one…if you like that sort of thing! 😉

    Where we ate:

    • Lefkes– An old winery from the 1800s that was converted to a restaurant, great food and ambiance! Make sure to sit outside, up on the second floor if possible for the best sunset views!
    • Canaves Oia Hotel (Infinity Pool Restaurant) – not sure why this was recommended. While the rooftop sunset views were pretty spectacular and the food was good- we were literally the ONLY ones there…which is a big turn-off for me when it comes to restaurants.
    • Melenio– We ate here for lunch- just a little tapas cafe, but it had gorgeous views of the famous three domed cathedral and the ocean! It’s right off the main strip in Oia, right after the main square, on your left!
    • Boat- We took a sunset cruise on our last night (see above) and they fed us a delicious Greek meal on board!img_0891-1

    Tips:

    1. For the Ferry you can actually purchase different level tickets. The highest level will get you access to the top floor of the ferry, with big cozy chairs, tables, and full food/drink waiter service. The ferry ride is a little over 2 hours- with stops, so it’s worth it if you want to avoid the big crowds and really relax for the ride! Also, PRINT your ferry tickets in advance!
    2. Most of the nice restaurants give you a shot of Ouzo after dinner. I’m not a huge fan of hard liquor or shots, but didn’t want to insult the waiters so I wound up pouring mine into my water glass most nights! Ha…just be prepared!
    3. Again, bring Euros! We had issues with the “ATM” machines and you’ll need lots of cash for tipping and for the smaller shops that don’t take credit cards!
    4. If you do the Fira to Oia hike, here are some tips try to follow along with the names/directions, it sounds kinda tricky, but I swear it’s not! So, the road starting in Fira and ending in Oia (the direction we took) is more downhill than going the opposite direction (starting in Oia, ending in Fira). So, if you’re staying in Oia, I suggest taking a taxi to Fira and hiking home. If you’re staying in Fira, hike to Oia then take a taxi back home! Also, start early so you don’t get stuck in the mid-day heat, wear comfortable hiking shoes (not CONVERSE, like me!) and bring a backpack with cell phone, CASH, backup cell charger, snacks, and water!

    I think that’s about it! It was seriously the best vacation of my lifetime (totally worth the wait!) and writing this post has me daydreaming about going back! Please let me know if you have any questions…happy to answer them if I can!

    Leaving Your Child with a Caregiver

    **UPDATE: So obviously we are already back from our trip but I completely forgot to post this before we left! And in retrospect, although some of this was excessive, my mom did find the medical sheets helpful when she had to bring Max to the doctor for a little cough.**

    Ok, so- Ryan and I are going to Greece tomorrow- our first trip sans-kids, well….ever!  And despite my snowballing anxiety about leaving- I’d say we are long over-due. Anyways, ever since I posted on my instagram stories about leaving behind a full-blown pamphlet for my mom who is watching the kids, I’ve gotten so many questions. I figured I’d tell you quickly about what I’m leaving for my mom.

    First of all, I should start by telling you that my mom is the most trustworthy, capable human for the job. Not only did she raise three of us, but she also ran an in-home daycare for most of her/our lives. She’s been called “The Baby Whisperer” and it’s not even a joke. So, the job is not daunting to her in the least, it’s in her nature and she thrives with a household of children. That being said, I simply cannot control my OCD, Type-A personality and therefore am leaving her with a complete novel about the runnings of our household.

    As crazy as you may think I am (and I well in fact may be!), there are some documents and pieces of information that should ALWAYS be left behind when you are leaving your children with someone-even an overqualified grandparent. Here is what I left my mom (I’ve starred the ones I think are crucial):

    1. DAILY LIFE: I leave a full blown schedule of the day: morning to night. This list includes meal times, meal ideas, bottle/nap times, camp pick-up/drop off times, activities the kids are and are not allowed to do while we are away (ex. No swinging from the dangerous gymnastics bar in the garage while Mimi is in charge), bath schedules, diaper size, locations of all shampoos, bug sprays, sunscreens ect. I discuss monitors, bedtime routines, including how to handle wake-ups in the middle of the night. Literally anything that happens from the minute they wake up to the minute the wake up the following day is included…you know, just in case! 😉
      • Camp: I signed the girls up for camp M-F from 9-2 to give my mom a break and keep the girls busy (and get them super tired!) So I left a full page all about camp:times, address, directions, required attire, what the girls need to pack/bring each day.
    2. FOOD: Since my mom doesn’t live in the area, I left her a bunch of restaurant to-go menus and menus from restaurants that will deliver. I also gave her a list of meal ideas that I know the kids will eat without complaint, and a list of nearby drive-throughs. We also went grocery shopping for the week together and talked about things the girls like in their lunchboxes (for camp) and then created a big “snack basket” in the pantry with individual bags of snacks to make packing lunches super easy. I usually don’t give the kids lots of snack like this- so they think it’s SUCH a special treat!
    3. * MEDICAL:
      • I walked through our medicine cabinet with my mom. Made sure it contained essentials and non-expired meds like: thermometer, tylenol, benedryl, etc. I also left a post-it note in the medicine box with each kids current weight for medicine dosing purposes.
      • Next, I printed out a sheet with the name, number, address AND typed directions for the following: our Pediatrician, our “Pediatrics After Hours” Facility, Urgent Care ER, and Hospital.
      • Another SUPER important thing you should always leave your caretaker is a CONSENT FOR MEDICAL TREATMENT. You can type one up yourself but I used this one from Rocket Lawyer and then just printed the draft because I’m cheap and didn’t want to pay for the professional docs. Don’t judge. If you make one yourself it should include a statement saying:
        • “I  (your full name) give (caretakers full name and address) consent and authority to obtain medical treatment for the following child(ren): (include name and date of birth of each child)”
        • Include the dates the caregiver has this authority
        • Include preferred hospital/doctor name and address
        • Include full Insurance information
        • Sign & Date
    4. *OUR ITINERARY: You never know when cell service will be spotty, so we left her a loose itinerary of where we will be traveling, hotel addresses/website and phone numbers, and all of our flight information so that she could ALWAYS find us in case of emergency.
    5. *LIST OF FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS: We lucked out in this department! We have the best neighbors and friends who all volunteered to help if need be. So I left my mom a page of my friend’s names, kids names, and phone numbers. I also left instructions/permission for which kids are allowed to have play dates, etc. (If you’re wondering I said only Q was allowed play dates, only with the people on the list, and that no sleepovers were allowed.)
    6. OUTFITS: Ok, this one, I admit, is my full-blown OCD kicking in, but I paired up and laid out enough outfits for each day we’d be gone. I put them all in Ardyn’s room so that my mom can use that as a sort-of “giant closet/dressing room” for the kids…since the girls sleep together in Q’s room most nights anyways! For camp, I made sure I had the girls daily camp attire (leotards, shorts, hair clips, flip-flops) set aside as well.
    7. *STROLLERS/CARSEATS: We walked through how to open/close all the baby gear she would be needing/using. Those contraptions can be tricky sometimes.
    8. ELECTRONICS: Since we have some tvs in our house that are kind of complicated to use, we have typed-up remote control instructions that we leave with any sitter we use. My mom will find this helpful so that she can maneuver apple tv, DVR, etc. in case she needs to put something on for the kids or wants to watch her own shows at night.
    9. BEHAVIOR INCENTIVE FOR KIDS: We talked a lot to each kid about behavior expectations and responsibilities. I then sat with the girls and created this pom-pom jar with their help (based on an incentive jar I used to use in my classroom). We did it quickly and it’s NOT perfect, but I allowed the girls to help set the rules so that they understand how it all works. We left lots of “incentives”  and “goals” for them to work towards so I don’t think behavior will be a problem. They are already SO excited about filling that jar and earning some prizes.     We’re Baaaaack! I can’t believe our long-awaiting annual Caribbean trip is already over! If we didn’t have some other fun summer adventures planned, I’d be even more bummed. But, let’s get down to business: all about Nevis! You guys asked, I’m answering…!Photo Jun 02, 9 33 58 AM

    First Stop, Miami:

    It’s probably worth mentioning that we stayed a few days in South Beach, FL before heading to Nevis. It was a nice way to break up the travel time and get a few extra days out of our vacation. Since we couldn’t check in on Nevis until Sunday, we did Fri-Sat in Miami. We stayed at the 1 Hotel and I was SO impressed. I heard “swanky” things about this place and was nervous to show up with 3 kids in tow but let me just tell you- first of all, it WAS swanky…and gorgeous and incredible, but also SO kid friendly! I couldn’t believe how many children were there! Here’s my tip, for a less-crowded pool experience, sit at the bottom tier pool. It’s smaller, less people, but still has a bar/food access and cabanas! Lots of restaurants and shopping in walking distance and a Whole Foods only a mile away (where we stopped for some last minute Max provisions).     Ok, so we travel to the Caribbean every year- it’s our absolute favorite place to vacation! We used to hit up the Caribbean islands on cruises as kids and then started staying on individual islands as we grew older & became tired of the cruise ship “hustle & bustle”. So, we’ve been to our fair share of the US & British Virgin Islands and as much as I LOVE exploring new places, I find there are a few non-negotiables I look for when traveling to the Caribbean:

    1. white powdery sand

    2. crystal clear, calm ocean water

    3. no giant crowds (aka, the cruise ship herd that I used to be a part of! Ha!)

    I mean, throw in some rum punch, a few good restaurants, friendly people, and a tourist attraction or two and I’m set!

    Nevis was a new island for us…and up until the planning of this vacation I had never even HEARD of it before! [If you’re like me, let me save you the google search: it’s in the West Indies, just south of St. Kitts.] It was a beautiful island: lush & quaint. It has a volcano at its center, winding roads, a Four Seasons Resort, and lots of roaming animals (including monkeys!). I do have to say, the beach was a little underwhelming. The sand was darker, volcanic sand and the water was a bit deeper, darker, and rougher than the Caribbean water I am used to. The island was very peaceful & quiet- lots of privacy (Apparently Princess Diana & the Royal Family used to vacation there, specifically for this reason!) and overall- not a whole lot going on. But, we certainly had a great time!

    Accommodations:

    We stayed at a private residence in Paradise Beach Resort, via a vacation club we are members of. The house was perfect; it had a private pool and was basically ON the sand!

    Paradise Beach Resort, as a whole, was great: there was a tiki hut on the beach that served breakfast & lunch and had a full bar. The staff was amazing and attentive- bringing water and fresh towels to our seats, making the girls special juice drinks all day, and changing the menu to accommodate what we wanted (enter: ME, the resident picky eater!) As I mentioned earlier, the sand was dark volcanic sand and the ocean was different from the water I’ve experienced on other Caribbean islands. But, it was still very pretty. The resort had kayaks, stand up paddle boards, floats, and sand toys all available to use and the Four Seasons resort, which we had full access to, was just a quick walk down the beach.

I’m not saying it isn’t beautiful- it just definitely did not look like that first picture in person. Pretty nuts what some editing does, huh? 😉

    Restaurants:

    *Note: I’m not the best food critic as I don’t eat seafood or red meat. Let’s just say my options were pretty limited & overall, my stomach was NOT a fan of the food on Nevis. I ate a lot of french fries and bread. Hah!

    2018-06-18_0004Bananas SUCH a cool location up in the mountains. The pathway was lit with tiki torches and twinkle lights and it was just so pretty! The grounds consists of a bar, a restaurant, a boutique, and a rooftop lounge. My suggestion- get there early, grab a cocktail, and head to the rooftop to watch the sunset before dinner! The food was pretty good, too. I had french onion soup and a salad for dinner. But apparently the lobster risotto was amazing. *note: don’t forget your bug spray…you’re basically in the jungle 😉

     

     

    The Gin Trap

    2018-06-18_0003The Gin Trap LOVED this place! The restaurant itself was very cool but the best part was the upstairs patio- filled with bright florals, turquoise couches and oversized umbrellas. It was the perfect place to watch the sunset and our waiter suggested we hang out up there and enjoy some cocktails and order our food. He came and got us when the appetizers were ready to be served and we moved downstairs to eat. I have to say- the power did go out while they were cooking our food. Like, I’m talking FULL power outage where we were sitting in a completely dark room with only candle light. It was kind of cool and added to the experience, but I believe it may have compromised the food a bit. I got cheese raviolis which are pretty hard to mess up…but, alas, they found a way. It was either the power outage or the fact that “Italian” is not the fortè of the Nevians, but those in our party who ordered seafood said it was delicious. So, there’s that.

    2018-06-18_0005Mangos This restaurant is part of the Four Seasons and it was really simple, but pretty. It’s basically a covered patio right ON the water. The view and sunset were gorgeous! The food was pretty good, too. I ordered a salad (again) but it was by far the best salad I had on trip. 😉

    2018-06-18_0006Four Seasons Cabana We walked down and ate here for lunch one day. It was pretty; an open air venue outdoors by the pools, overlooking the beach. I got a pizza and the “Nevisian Spirit” cocktail…which did not disappoint! Thanks IG friends for suggesting it! It sort of tasted like a passion fruit rum punch. Yummy!

    2018-06-18_0007Montpelier Probably the coolest, most “touristy” place we went. It’s a 350 year old sugar mill located on what has been turned into an inn/resort (where Princess Di used to stay). The mill tower itself is still in tact and you can make reservations to eat inside. Warning…it’s dark…and um, warm and toasty, and pretty much in it’s original condition. Pretty cool if its just two of you & you want a very authentic experience. Otherwise, the main restaurant downstairs, “750” was by far the fanciest of all the restaurants we went to.  The food was delicious and our Italian sommelier was the bomb! He even “seasoned” our wine glasses, which we haven’t seen anyone do since we were on our Honeymoon in Italy!

    At Paradise Beach, you have the option to hire a private chef to come cook in your home. The convenience factor, after a long day of boating or at the beach, was great. We did this two of the nights and it was perfect for our big group.  On the whole, I have to say- I just don’t think Nevisian food agrees with me. (NOTHING like Chef Mimi from Virgin Gorda who I tried to smuggle home in my suitcase last year!) 😉

     

    Things to do/see:

    1. The Hamilton Museum We didn’t get a chance to explore it, but did you know Nevis was the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton?! His father’s horse stables are still in tact…although they’ve been converted into something else.
    2. Mineral baths- We didn’t go here either, but our driver for the week, “Baba” (request him if you can!) told us all about this “ancient hot spring, turned baths” and how after 7pm at night you need to wait in line because the locals flock there! I have to say, I did a quick google search and I’m kiiiiinda glad ok that we missed it. (See photo #2 above)
    3. Botanical Garden Another family staying at our resort went and told us it wasn’t anything much to see, so we skipped it. But if flowers are your thing, check it out!
    4. Montpelier Get a tour of the grounds at the very least. Such a cool historic place…and the drive up is pretty!
    5. Horseback riding on the beach- This looked fun but the girls weren’t old enough so we decided to skip it- next time for sure!
    6. Sunshines This a local dive beach bar near the Four Seasons that we heard about from just about every local. We didn’t go, because…children. But apparently this place is known for it’s drink called the Killer Bee. And apparently you are only allowed TWO. I guess it’s a “thing” to go have a Killer Bee at Sunshines. So if you’re kid-free, maybe go check it off your bucket list!
    7. Funky Monkey Tours a tour around the island in a little ATV-like car. We had it booked, but were told by numerous people that the kids would NOT enjoy it and that it wasn’t very exciting, so we cancelled.
    8. Paradise Beach Lobster Bake- Our resort hosted a fun beach party/lobster bake…only they didn’t have any lobster- not that I cared, of course…(I don’t eat seafood, if you’re new here). They had a huge bonfire, a live band, and all the resort guests were invited. It was super festive & fun (minus the missing lobster and s’mores -which the kids were bummed about) but the girls had a blast dancing in the sand to the music, Max fell asleep in my arms, and the starry sky was unreal!     9. Catamaran Day– We chartered a catamaran through Leeward Island Charters and that was a fun day. They brought us snorkeling and over to St. Kitt’s for lunch. Boat Days are always our favorites! If you rent from this company, request St. Claire to be on your crew. He was AMAZING and so so good with the kids! Even taught Q the Cupid Shuffle on deck! Hahaha!2018-06-18_0013

    “Road Trip” (aka St. Barth’s)

    We realized during our stay that we weren’t too far away from St. Barth’s so we chartered a speed boat ferry to bring us over there one day. It. Was. AMAZING!!!!!! I felt like we were in the South of France: the shopping was incredible, the food was outrageous, and the beach we went to (Nikki Beach) was insanely beautiful (THE Caribbean experience I was waiting for!) It was kind of a trek though, so I would NOT recommend making the trip from Nevis to St. Barths with just anyone. We had our concierge hook us up with the most trusted charter company on St. Kitts and Nevis (Islander Watersports Nevis) and they took us out. The boat ride was a bit bumpy for me but everyone else was fine with it. The ride there was about 1.5-2 hours and the ride home was a bit longer because we had to stop over in St. Kitts to declare customs. As a “day trip” from Nevis, I’d say it was NOT worth the amount of travel, BUT it was worth it for us because we were dying to see the island and wound up loving it so much, we already booked a trip back!!

    Baby Beach Gear

    1. Pop-up pool tent– Of course Max didn’t sit in here ALL day long- because he’s a one year old & a complete maniac… but he did play in here for spurts of time, so it was worth it in my book.
    2. Snorkel Masks- The girls LOVE these and I know they’ve gotten some bad press in the news lately, but I’ve done some research and feel safe using them the way we do. The girls use them for super short periods of time and are never, ever, ever out of our reach when wearing them. I think the “scare” in the news regarding breathing in too much carbon dioxide while wearing them and the inability to pull them off quickly in an emergency really applies more to people who are wearing them on solo, extensive snorkel excursions. I think it’s also important to buy a quality mask and not cheaper knock-offs. The higher end masks have passed all the carbon dioxide and other safety tests. One of the brands we like is Tribord .
    3. Regular Goggles- for the girls. We love our Bling2o ones!
    4. Life Jackets– since we knew we’d be doing some boating, we opted for packing life jackets instead of swimmies or puddle jumpers. They are safer and more trusted life-saving devices. We love the O’Brien brand, plus they have a size small enough for Max.
    5. A few small water toys– Like THESE. We did not pack all sorts of pails and shovels. We figured we could buy from the resort once we arrived but it turned out the resort had a big basket of sand toys for us to use anyways!
    6. Hats- baseball caps for boat days and big floppy hats for beach days! We love our initial hats from Rey to Z!
    7. Sunscreen- see my favorite baby/kid sunscreens HERE
    8. Crib- A crib, highchair, and pack & play were all provided for us by the resort, so no need to pack those!
    9. Stroller- I covered travel strollers on THIS post, but our favorite for travel is the Pockit. We loved it so much, we upgraded to the newest version which has a bigger shade and reclines! It’s SO lightweight and folds up small enough to stow in the overhead compartment on the plane!
    10. Nanit Monitor- I talked A LOT about this monitor when sleep training Max and I still absolutely love it! However, ours is mounted on a tall floor stand that hovers over his crib so I was thinking of just bringing a standard baby monitor on this trip until I discovered that the Nanit now has a TRAVEL STAND! Yassss! You just unclip the Nanit from the tall floor stand and clip it right into the travel/table stand! Plus, you can obviously use this stand at home, when you aren’t traveling, if you prefer it to the overhead stand/wall mount. I love that it connects to your phone so we didn’t need to pack extra pieces (ie a camera AND monitor piece). I seriously love this camera system so much!
    11. Sound Machine- we always travel with ours. I use this one because it’s cheap enough to replace once it starts dying (using it every night, all night will wear these suckers out) and its small and light enough to travel with.
    12. Kids’ CameraKids’ Camera– My friend Liz posted this on her Instagram and I knew my girls would LOVE it! It’s an actual digital camera that you put a memory card in and can upload images to your computer…but it’s perfect for tiny fingers. My girls took so many pictures with this on our trip and I can’t wait to upload them all and see what they captured! I love seeing the world through their eyes! P.S. Don’t forget a memory card! THIS is the one we bought!
    13. Expendables- I’m talking about things we needed for our stay, but would be using up and not bringing back home (ie diapers, water diapers, wipes, formula, and snacks). For these items we pack (and check) a cardboard box. We load it up with any expendables and this way, when they are all used up and we are headed home, we don’t have an extra (empty) suitcase to lug home. We were able to order groceries for the house through the resort, so I just packed special snacks for Max that I didn’t know if Nevis would have: food pouches, num-num crackers, pirates booty, formula (I didn’t want to make the switch to milk before this trip since I’m a weirdo about milk and didn’t trust what the island would have!)
    14. Cinemood– We LOVE this little machine! The kids watched movies on it almost every night before bed. Totally took the place of the ipads that used to take over bedtime. Plus, it’s super small, making it perfect for travel!

    Your Questions

    • What are the sleeping arrangements when you’re on a trip like this? Our house had four bedrooms so my immediate family had two bedrooms to use as we wanted. Ryan and I took one room and put Max’s crib in our second room. The girls wound up sleeping one with my mom and one with us. We could’ve easily put the girls in our second room and Max in the room with us, but this was what worked best for us. 🙂 My brother had the 4th room.
    • How do we get the kids used to sleeping in new places? We’ve really never had any issues with this. We bring a sound machine, allow each kid to bring a “blanket” or stuffed animal that they sleep with every night at home, and the girls loved snuggling in bed with us and with their Mimi so it was never a problem. We also used the cinemood to help overtired kiddos fall asleep quicker. I also use a “sleep spray” at home made of essential oils and I travel with a small spray bottle of that to spray on hotel beds.
    • How do you keep up with all the kids daily schedules while on the go? We go into vacation knowing that schedules will most likely be thrown out the window. For the girls that mostly just applies to bedtime, since their daytime schedules are pretty flexible anyways. We went out to a lot of dinners so they definitely went to bed much later than they do at home, but hey- it’s vacation! For Max we tried our best to get in two naps a day, as close to the times he naps at home as possible (9am and 1pm). For our beach days, this was easy. We took turns bringing him up to the house and sitting by the pool/reading while he napped (ok, twist my arm!). During boat days, we just gave him his bottle and hoped for the best. Most of the time he fell asleep on one of us. “Shoulder Naps” obviously don’t last as long as “crib naps” so he was extra cranky those days and we just tried to make the best of it. We made sure to always carry extra food pouches and snacks so that we could feed him if nothing he liked was available at meal time- you know, since he’s the pickiest eater on the planet…no idea where he gets this from! 😉2018-06-18_0002
    • How did you decide on Nevis/book all the details? We are members of a vacation club, which is sort of hard to explain, but just think of it like owning a time share.  We log in to the club website, look at the destinations/dates that are available and pick a place! We had never been to Nevis and heard great things, so we wanted to check it out. We book everything through the travel club- down to activities and ordering groceries. We typically have a big family meeting to discuss all the activity options that everyone wants to do, and then start planning. Ryan is actually our “travel guide”.     • How do you get to Nevis? We flew Dallas to Miami, Miami to St. Kitts, taxi from St. Kitt’s airport to St. Kitt’s marina, then a water taxi from St. Kitt’s marina to Nevis marina, then a taxi from Nevis marina to our house. Not gonna lie to you- it’s a looooooong day!
    • How do you handle long travel days with kids? Lots of snacks, candy for bribery, ipads (that they otherwise are not allowed to have- so it’s a total novelty), lots of activities in their backpacks, card games, coloring, blankets for napping, and a wish and a prayer! Ha! Honestly we just go with it! We get them food at the airport, and bring them a change of clothes/pjs so they can travel comfy ( Plain Jane and Alice & Ames are our travel outfit go-tos for the girls.) For Max we try our best to get him good and tired- let him run around the airport, and then give him a bottle once we board and hope he crashes.  If it’s in the budget to get your baby their own seat- do it! We didn’t on this trip, but we lucked out on one leg we had an empty seat next to us and I’m telling you- having that extra space was a game changer!     • What cameras did you bring/use? Just my iphone and my Fuji camera. It’s my FAVORITE ever! I bought it specifically for travel so that I didn’t need to bring my big old Nikon, but now I use the Fuji even when I’m at home. I’m obsessed!
    • What’s your fav place to book cheap airfare? We use points sometimes (Ryan flies a lot for work) or we sometimes use Expedia. Mostly we just book on American Airlines, but we typically book pretty far out in advance or when prices are lowest.
    • Where did you get all the girls outfits? Honestly this one is so hard to answer because it would take forever to tag every shop. I’d say, head to my IG feed! I typically tag all the shops every time I post a picture! 🙂
    • Best travel snacks for the kids? For the house we ordered lots of fresh fruit, oj, water bottles, and “safe items” like boxed mac & cheese, goldfish, and cheerios. For our cardboard box of “expendables” we packed pouches for Max, Pirates Booty, applesauce pouches, num-num crackers, yogurt drops, and small individual bags of snacks like pretzels, graham crackers, animal crackers etc. We pack similar things for the flight- but always include apples, bananas, and try to buy a few “fresh” items once we are at the airport- like yogurt, cheese, or a fresh fruit cup to eat on the plane. Don’t forget a few lollipops and fruit snacks for when those little ears pop!
    • What did you pack for yourself? I did a separate post with my fav products and beach pieces HERE!
    • Where are you headed next? Hmmm…well we’ve got some fun adventures planned for this summer starting with our first ever kid-free trip to Greece in two weeks!! Eeek!     One of my IG followers told me: “If you’re looking for an island with lots of action, it may not be for you. If you’re looking for quiet & relaxation, Nevis is your island.” And she was absolutely right.

    We ate at some great restaurants, rented jet skis, paddle boarded, chartered a catamaran, took a day trip over to St. Barth’s and had lots of relaxing beach time at Paradise Beach. We found plenty to do and overall it was a great trip!! I’m so, so glad that we went so that I can check it off the list and say we’ve been. But, will we be going back? Probably not. I feel like maybe, with Nevis: once is enough. For us, anyways.

    I feel like I got a collective “enough about the kids” sigh from y’all on instagram…and I know when to take a hint. 😉 Us mamas (and non-mamas) need to pamper ourselves, too. I totally get it! So, I went ahead and rounded up my 10 favorite summer products as promised… and then kept on going and shared some of my favorite summer wardrobe staples as well! Here it is- a glimpse into what’s in my beach bag…and closet!

    Rainbow Tile Bracelets! Love my stack of these. Mine stack is a mix of pricier pieces and knockoffs. Roxanne Assoulin(1) has some beutiful pieces, but they tend to run on the pricier end. You can get the same “rainbow tile” look  HERE and HERE (2) for cheaper! Shashi (3) is my favorite brand for the smaller tile look! Love this set of 12 multi bead bracelets,(4) too!     Perhaps I should start with my love for this little company called Kopari! I started buying their tub o’ coconut melt, back when that was the only product they carried! Now they have a ton of products- all 100% pure organic coconut oil based; No sulfates. No silicones. No parabens. No GMOs. No toxins- EVER. Let’s just say I want every product this company makes! But here are a few of my favs for summer, along with some others I’m LOVING:

    1. Kopari Coconut Body Oil Spray – Use this in lieu of a lotion. I sprayed myself down with this after the shower every night on vacation and my skin just soaked it on up. Left the prettiest sheen on my skin! For an extra glow/shimmer, I added a layer of the Body Glow (below). And If you aren’t crazy about using oil as moisturizer, the  Kopari Coconut Body Milk  gives you the same “skin drench factor” but with a standard lotion base!
    2. Kopari Coconut Deodorant Stick I can NOT tell you how much I love this little stick. I know it is a deodorant, and I used it as that every morning before hitting up the beach, but I also used it everywhere and anywhere my skin needed some extra moisture. Don’t judge- but my favorite use for this product was to glide it along my bikini line (especially after shaving) so that I didn’t get that terrible bathing suit chafe/razor burn- y’all know what I’m talking about. 😉  It worked like a charm! And as far as underarm odor protection, it worked well. Obviously not as good as your typical/stronger (ahem, chemical-filled) deodorants/antiperspirants from the drug store- but I’m fine with that. I don’t do antiperspirants anyways…but that’s a whole different blog post! 😉
    3. Kopari Coconut Body Glow – This gives your skin the perfect amount of shimmer and glow, if you like that sort of thing. I applied it to my legs before dinner every night while on vacation and tapped a tiny bit on my cheekbones. The perfect summer “highlighter!”
    4. SuperGoop Glo Stick – This little stick is Fan-freaking-tastic! It has the same consistency of the Kopari Deo Stick but WITH SPF! I would apply it over my sunscreen base in the morning and throughout the day anywhere I wanted a little extra (protected) glow! I also love that Supergoop uses clean ingredients and is always oxybenzone, paraben and cruelty-free.
    5. Super Goop SPF Mousse – I recently was sent a sample of this mousse sunscreen and loved it so much I went back and bought the full sized bottle. It’s airy and lighter than a lotion and won’t leave your skin feeling dried out like lots of the sprays will.
    6. Supergoop Acai SPF Lip Balm– I use this lip balm ALL. YEAR. LONG. I love that it keeps my lips protected (especially after I started noticing some sun spots on my lips from my earlier/carefree years!) The Acai flavor is my fav!
    7. Drunk Elephant Umbra Tinte– You guys, just click the link and BUY THIS PRODUCT! My sister brought it home from a charity event swag bag for me and now we are both completely hooked. It’s a lightweight, tinted SPF and I’m obsessed. I use it every single day! Also, you won’t find silicones, chemical sunscreens, sensitizing dyes, perfumes, or fragrant essential oils of any kind in Drunk Elephant products. I use their entire skin care line…but again, that’s a different post altogether!
    8. Dior Sugar Scrub“One of these things does not look like the other…one of these things just isn’t the same!” Anyone else remember that Sesame Street song?! Ok, so this product doesn’t fit in with all of my other “synthetic free/all natural” products in this post but I unfortunately LOVE this stuff! It has grains of sugar that exfoliate your lips upon application and then melt away- leaving your lips super soft with the cutest tint of pink. I am not a big lipstick girl, so this slight pinch of color is everything for me! It’s such a great summer product!
    9. Dior Show Waterproof- My all-time, hands-down, favorite mascara ever (thanks to my bestie for giving it to me for my birthday a few years back)!! Only, a waterproof version, because…summer!
    10. Truffle Bags– And what does one use to tote around all of these amazing summer products, you ask? Truffle Bags! I was introduced to these through another beauty blogger and bought one to try it out…then want back and bought a few more. They are adorable, sturdy, slim, and come in all different sizes. I use them for all my travel/packing needs (Did I mention they are TSA approved?!)! They are a little pricey, so maybe start with one and see how much you love them. I’m fully hooked! Here are my favorite sizes for travel:
    • Jetset Case: best for bottles, tech supplies, makeup brushes, jewelry, or anything with more depth to it- like your travel camera! ;)|
    •  Large Clarity Pouch: I use this one for my shampoos, toiletries, and sunscreen
    • Small Flat Clarity Pouch: Think of it like a purse organizer- lipstick, mascara, loose change, etc. It also fits travel sized products.
    •  Large Clutch: perfect for concerts/games when only clear bags are permitted! But it obviously can be used as a organizer as well. I love putting my kindle & charger in this one!

    2. Fun “Word Play” Wide Brim Hat Just bought this cute cheapie from Old Navy for our Nevis trip. Love the frayed edges!
    3. Straw Panama Hat I love a smaller brimmed hat for when my suit or coverup is a little more tailored/funky or to wear with non-beachy outfits when out exploring.

    God, I just HATE swimsuit shopping! Luckily, I found a few brands that work on my body so I tend to just stick to them. Marysia is definitely my favorite swimsuit brand.  I just think her pieces are timeless and beautiful…but they are super pricey so I get a new one maybe every year or two and fill in with lots of other fun/cheaper brands. This year I got the green one shoulder Marysia I linked below (#2). It’s so gorgeous and totally worth the splurge; I’ll wear it forever! I’ve linked a bunch of my other favorites below as well.     I always pack three bag sizes when going on a trip: a large (for carrying our entire family’s stuff to and from the beach), medium (for day time activities) and small (for evening). I carry the large size on the plane and then only need to pack two smaller bags in my luggage!  I LOVE me a neutral-ish beach bag, but also love a fun/colorful clutch as well. Nothing like a crisp white summer dress paired with some heels and a festive clutch for a summer night out!!

    • 1 I brought this one to Nevis and it held up through the entire trip of carrying everything but the kitchen sink! Plus the poms are removable.
    • 2 A smaller version of #1, again- poms are removable!
    • 3 Totally in love with this one! Round bags are so in right now.

    Tips for a Mountain Vacation

     We got so many messages and questions while we were away after Christmas this year so I figured I’d answer some of them here! Let me know if you have any others and I’ll add them to the post!

    Where were you guys?

    Vail, Colorado

    We’ve been going skiing for a few years now the week between Christmas and New Years. In the past, we’ve always stayed right in Vail Village, but this year we stayed in the next village over (a 3 minute shuttle ride) called Lionshead. It literally looked like Arendelle from the movie Frozen! It was super cute and a 30 second walk to the mountain from our hotel, BUT we all agreed that Vail Village is much better in terms of walking around, shopping, eating, etc.

    Where did you stay?

    Austria Haus- Did you click the link? HOW cute is this place? We stayed here our first year. Very small, very cozy. Amazing brunch. Right on the main strip in Vail Village so you can basically walk anywhere. However, it was a little TOO small for me.

    Tivoli Lodge– Stayed here last year. This one might be my favorite. It’s small enough to have that cabin-in-the-woods feel but big enough to NOT feel like a bed & breakfast (not my thing). This place has an awesome lobby with a giant fireplace and huge oversized couches and chairs. Hot chocolate and fresh cookies are abundant and it’s just all-around cozy! Also right in the heart of Vail Village.

    Arrabelle- This is where we stayed this year. It is in Lionshead and it was by far the fanciest place of the three. It was super beautiful, provided us with a 3 bedroom unit so that my whole extended family could stay together instead of in separate hotel rooms, and the service was impeccable. It also had a restaurant “Tavern on the Square” attached which had a great brunch and an AWESOME rooftop with hot tubs and a heated pool. (Did I mention an awesome spa as well? Definitely took advantage of that!) It was also about a 30 second walk to the gondola from the hotel- so the location was ideal. The ONLY downside to this place, well two actually: 1. You have to take a shuttle or car to Vail Village and 2. Although beautiful, this hotel lacked the “cozy mountain cabin” feel that the other two places had!

    Best places to eat?

    In Lionshead:

    Blue Moose Pizza– yummy casual pizza right in the square

    Garfinkles– They have an awesome outdoor patio on the second story where you can basically watch people ski down the mountain while you eat. They fill up FAST at lunch but I believe you can call ahead and make reservations.

    Bart & Yetis– cute little lunch spot.

    In Vail:

    Bol- This is a bowling alley attached to an amazing restaurant. Caution: you can NOT walk in and bowl. We tried that the first year and they laughed in our faces. We basically make our reservations a year in advance.

    Elways– This is a steak house and is always our fanciest meal of the trip. Pricey but worth it for the side dishes alone.

    La Bottega– Yummy, tiny little Italian joint. If you are a big party and you call to make reservations ask to NOT sit by the front door. When it’s freezing outside, and the door keeps opening, that seat stinks!!

    Campo di Fiori– our #1 FAVORITE italian meal in Vail. Seriously delicious!

    Vendettas– a cute little lunch spot- yummy soup. Very popular and fills up quick!

    Pepis– known for their bavarian pretzels and sausages (yuk!) Also, here’s a secret tip, you need to call for his schedule, but they have a singer named Andy who performs at night and he is AH-MAZING! Go watch him sing, and tell him “Dallas” sent you! Don’t forget to do a shot-ski while you’re there! Kids can only stay until 8pm, fyi.

    The Red Lion– Maybe the most popular lunch spot in the village…? Always packed, get there early if you can to save a table. And then order the nachos, stat.

    Pazzos– A yummy pizza place in V V. Also gets CRAZY crowded at dinner with a line out the door, so go early or order to go!

    Big Bear Bistro– a teeny tiny little breakfast joint. Super yummy but also can get pretty packed!

    Loaded Joe’s– a hidden gem…downstairs little coffee nook!

    Joe’s Famous Deli– a yummy  downstairs deli where Vince Vaughn is known to eat with his fam! 😉 (saw him there last year)

    Mountain Standard– Another place we walked by but have never eaten. Looks pretty awesome! A definite must for next year!

    Did both girls ski? How long have they been skiing?

    We put Q in private ski lessons when she was three. Then last year we put her in all day every day ski school and found to be much more effective. This year she did one day of a private lesson and then skied with Ryan the rest of the trip. She’s pretty much a pro now and skis circles around me (which isn’t exactly a hard thing to do!)

    This was Cubby’s first year and she did ski school almost every day & loved it!

    Where did you get the girls coats?

    The girl’s pink and maroon winter coats were from J Crew. I linked them HERE. I’d highly suggest getting a pair of mittens on a string. You, know like in the olden days? I linked my favs from EGG, HERE. We strung them through the girl’s coats and never had to worry about them for the rest of the trip. (obviously these are not ski gloves, just casual winter mittens)

    What gear do the girls wear in the snow/when skiing?

    Ok, here’s my clothing checklist for when they ski:

    They’ve always been plenty warm in that. Remember they’re moving a lot and working up a sweat under those layers!

    The girl’s ski gear was a mix of brands from different ski shops collected over the years. Our fav ski brand for kids are Obermeyer, KJUS, & Patagonia. I’ll link a few options here, but you’ll need to explore for the style/fit/price that best works for your kiddo:

    Where did you get the girls pom hats?

    Ok, I hesitate to share these because I can hear the collective eye rolls and judgement…ha! But here goes…the pom hats were from my favorite kid’s boutique in Vail called Skipper and Scout. They are by Mischa Lampert. You can get them a bunch of places, I linked one of the rainbow stripe ones HERE.  And before you eye roll, let me be the first to say: yes, they are pricey. VERY pricey. We bought Q one last year and then waited until this year to buy Cub one. But, they are made from some seriously quality materials, and they are so thick and keep the girls super warm.  Plus they also fit adults. The girls will have these for years and years so we think of them as investment pieces (plus, I can borrow them ;)! Expensive hats are not for everyone, I understand- but so many people asked where they were from, I had to link them. (I will say, they were cheaper at Skipper & Scout than they are in that link above. So maybe contact them and see if you can order via phone?!)

    Whats the best place to get cold weather gear for us moms?

    So I get almost all of my winter gear at a local shop in Dallas called St. Bernard Sports. I also got that fun pink pom beanie from Nordstrom this year that I posted in my IG stories. I’ll link a few of my favorite pieces for you! I usually bring cute “walking/shopping/dining clothes” and then my ski clothes.

    Ski pants – I love this legging look, and YES they are still super warm! I wear them to “ski” (we all know I can’t ski) AND sometimes out at night in the village! LOVE these by Erin Snow and they are super comfy! Worth the investment.

    Boots: Go for comfort and warmth!! Love THESE and THESE (for a fun furry option!)  We had very mild weather this year so I was able to wear my cute pink sperrys a lot! Unfortunately my pink sperrys sold out but I’m loving these gold ones and I actually really really love THESE original colored ones for next year! (UPDATE: I scoured the internet and found my pink duck boots HERE!! Plus, they’re on sale! Hurry up- these will not last!!!)

    How do you adjust to the altitude?

    OXYGEN! Literally the first thing we do when we arrive is stock up on the oxygen bottles. We use them throughout the entire trip. Also, water, water, water, water. I think we went through three cases of water while we were there. Other than that, we haven’t had much of an issue over the years…even with the little ones. We’ve all been able to acclimate pretty well!

    What stroller did you bring?

    Ok, so it’s kind of ironic. We bought the Cybex carseat and stroller combo which is so fancy and amazing and we use it ALL the time at home…and yet, we have never brought it with us on one trip!!! When Max was teeny I would carry him in a  baby wrap and then as soon as he was sitting we started traveling with an umbrella stroller.

    We use the Summer 3D-one Convenience Stroller . I love it because it reclines down, the hood has a huge canopy reach, the basket is a good size for an umbrella stroller, it folds down pretty narrow, has a foot stand so it can stand on its own once folded, is super lightweight, AND the bottom flap of the seat can fold up which basically creates a mini bassinet for smaller babies whose legs don’t reach the edge. We’ve traveled everywhere with this stroller and pretty much love it!

    Then, we bring our most favorite travel stroller on the planet: The Pockit. We have two of these but this time we just brought one, figuring both girls wouldn’t need to be riding the whole time and they could take turns in it. This stroller is SO great. It folds down to the size of a purse AND fits in the overhead of the airplane! The only thing is…it’s not the sturdiest- so like, don’t bring it off-roading with you. But for an easy-travel umbrella stroller, its pretty freaking amazing!!! *UPDATE: There is a new version of this stroller with a deeper canopy shade and an option to recline!

    Why don’t I bring a double stroller you ask? You know, I just really don’t like them. They’re big & clunky and don’t fold down very small (we were getting in and out of shuttles and cars  and in and out of tiny shops and restaurants, up and down elevators, etc. non-stop!). The side-by-side ones feel like you’re pushing a double wide and can’t fit through any doors and the front-to-back ones feel like you’re pushing one of the “extra” suburban Target carts. I’ve tested them all, I just am not a huge fan. Plus, there’s two of us- me and Ryan- and a handful of family members on this trip so we figured two tiny strollers would be much easier to navigate with so many helpers to push. We were right. These two strollers were a breeze to travel with! When Max gets older we’ll drop the Summer and just stick to the Pockits…because there’s a brand new one out that reclines!!!! Splurge for next year, I think! (yep- see above for the updated link!)

    Essentials for a Mountain Vacation?

    Ok, here is a list of absolute essentials (from my experience) to pack if you are doing a mountain trip with kiddos in the winter time:

    • HUMIDIFIER- call ahead and ask if your hotel provides them (Arrabelle did!), if not, consider traveling with a travel-size one like THIS awesome one (that works with a water bottle!) OR Amazon priming one to your hotel! You will thank me when everyone starts getting bloody noses and dry throats!
    • OXYGEN CANS- they sell them in EVERY shop in the villages! Just ask. Get big ones for your hotel room and travel sized ones for your bags!
    • SUNCREEN- Supergoop is a very serious FAV. This Mineral one is so good and the Acai Fusion SPF30 chapstick is life. I have one in every pocket of every coat. Usually I hate SPF chapsticks because the sunscreen seeps into my lips and feel like I can taste the sunscreen all day. NOT with this one. I use it daily and am obsessed!! Don’t think that just because you are bundled you don’t need suncreen- that snow is a natural reflector and you guys WILL get sunburt. And nobody wants a goggle tan line après ski. 😉
    • CHAPSTICK- see above! THIS one is my fav! I keep one in every purse & every coat pocket.
    • LOTION- You will want to bring a nice thick lotion to keep your skin hydrated. Your face and hands, etc. will get super dry!
    • STATIC GUARD- you will not believe the “weird science” effects the mountain environment will have on your hair!!
    • SALINE & NOSE BULB- the dry air will dry everyone out and most likely stuff you up too. We used the saline and nose bulb almost daily on Max!
    • TIGER BALM & EPSOM SALTS- if you are skiing you will be VERY thankful you brought these. I gave myself and the girls epsom salt baths to soothe our sore muscles, and my husband and I used the tiger balm on our shins and calves!
    • DRY EYE DROPS or MOISTURE DROPS- I get pretty bad dry eye so the mountain environment didn’t help. Just think of it this way- every single part of your body will get dry…bring anything to help yourself maintain hydration! These eye drops were super helpful for me
    • SUNGLASSES- duh. Feel silly listing this, but I wore my sunnies every single day! That snow reflection is bright!
    • LIGHT WEIGHT PJS- So you might think, oh winter…let me pack the fleece. Wrong! Most of these resorts have the heat cranked up! We were so dang hot we were opening the windows and doors at night for fresh air. You will want to pack light weight pjs for yourself and the kiddos. If they get chilly, there are always blankets to layer…but you don’t want them overheating in this pjs! I brought my favs: kickeepants and plain jane!
    • EUCALYPTUS/BREATHE DIFFUSER- Ok, so if you have a travel essential oil diffuser , like THIS one, BRING IT (along with some Breathe or eucalyptus oils to diffuse). If you don’t have a diffuser or don’t feel like traveling with one, grab some balm or a breathe stick that you can apply to chests and feet at night to help with breathing if everyone gets stuffy or short of breath. I love the actual BREATHE vapor stick from DoTerra and I also love this Dr. Bronner’s Menthol Balm. 
    • STROLLER SHIELD- There are so many great ones on the market, but I highly suggest grabbing one. We used THIS one. It really does help when you are walking around at night at it’s freezing and windy!
    • BALM OR SALVE FOR FACE CHAPPING- Poor Cubby got the most chapped face ever! Even with sunscreen and lotion. So I used plenty of balm on her face. These are my two favs: Mustela Hydra-Stick. Its amazing and glides right on those cheeks like a giant chapstick! Dr. Bronner’s Organic Unscented Magic Balm. It comes in a tin and is basically like magical vasaline. I slathered this stuff all over the kids faces and lips!

    What else do you do for fun besides ski?

    Well, since I hardly ski, this is an easy question! The “skiers” go out & ski every morning around 8:30. The non-skiers have breakfast, get ready, walk around the village, do some shopping, etc. Then the entire group meets for lunch everyday. We set a time and place beforehand so that everyone knows where to meet since cell service can be spotty. After lunch, some ski again, some don’t. Other fun things we do/did:

    • shopping
    • ice skating
    • games/ movies/puzzles in the house
    • napping 😉
    • bowling
    • dinner

    other fun activities that were not open/available this year but are on our list for next year:

    •  “snowcoaster” up on the mountain
    • sledding/tubing
    • dog sledding

    How do you capture photos while on vacation and what do you do with them?

    So, I stopped bringing my big camera on trips a long time ago. I just don’t have space for an extra giant camera bag with our caravan of stuff these days. On this trip I brought my fuji point & shoot….and NEVER unpacked it! I know pictures may tell a different story, but y’all these trips are mayhem! Traveling with 10 people, hopping from place to place, all the clothes and winter accessories and strollers and snacks and bottles- ah! It’s A LOT! I’ve stopped stressing about capturing “the perfect shot” and I use my iphone. I have the X and the camera is pretty freaking awesome. Every photo taken on this trip was taken on my phone!

    Then every year I create one epic “IG” book of all the photos I posted that year. (One of the reasons I post so much!) I use Artifact Uprising‘s Instagram book template and I LOVE them!

    June 2017:

    Well, friends- we’re back! Crazy to think that after all that planning and packing and prepping…the trip is already over. BUT- I will tell you, it was worth every second and every penny! Virgin Gorda *might* be my new favorite Caribbean destination!I received so many questions via Instagram while we were away and with data roaming charges being so high and the internet connection being less than stellar, I figured I’d answer some of them here!

    First off:

    Q & A’s clothes & bathing suits: I almost ALWAYS tag the shops their outfits are from. Just tap the picture on instagram to see the shop names (I know this seems kind of obvious, but I still get lots of  “Where is that dress from?” type questions over in Insta-land. So, yeah click the picture for shop names.) If it’s NOT tagged its most likely an old piece or something that is no longer available. OR my shopaholic brain simply forgot where I got it! 😉


    (Ex: These blue rompers got lots of questions and I didn’t tag them because they were purchased at Old Navy last summer- or even the summer before, maybe! I loved it when I bought it and went back and got one in every size- thus the reason Q & A both fit into one this summer! Yaaaay for being a shopaholic!)


    Travel Items: Ok, so I definitely over-packed for this trip (See Travel Tips post!) and I wanted to share a quick list of things I did NOT use while on vaca, things I definitely NEEDED and things I totally forgot to bring!

    Did NOT use:

    • The MiFold carseat boosters. Most travel in the Caribbean is done by way of boat or open air taxis so these seats stayed in the luggage the whole time. Boo!
    • Polaroid Camera. The charger got lost early on, the battery kept dying on us, and honestly Q just had no interest. Waste of luggage space.
    • So many outfits! We had a chef come in & we ate at the house a bunch on this trip, so the girls went from bathing suits & coverups straight into pjs most nights. I think we went out to dinner twice. So basically aside from travel clothes, I used TWO outfits for the girls. T-W-O. I will not even tell you how many I actually brought!
    • So many SHOES! I bought the girls THESE slip on sandals by Igor and they wore them every single day. On the two nights they dressed up to go out to restaurants they wore their brown salt water sandals. I literally only needed two pairs of shoes for them. Same for me. I needed flip flops. The end.
    • All those airplane toys. I’m on the fence with this one because the girls mostly watched their ipads on the plane BUT they did play with their toys during down time at the house. So I guess they did come in handy.
    • The Monkey Mat. The kids played IN the sand and Max, wellll- never let me put him down. Never needed it or opened it once!
    • Water shoes for the girls. We brought them for The Baths but the shoes were actually slippery on the rocks and it was easier/safer to go barefoot!

    Definitely USED:

    • snorkel masks
    • life jackets
    • alllll that food!
    • lots of bathing suit options…and lots of rashguards!
    • alllll that sunscreen
    • 6 packages of wipes! Thought I was over-packing here but, nope!
    • Boppy- for feeding, naps, airplane ride, etc. Used this every single day.
    • Breast pump, lots of breast milk storage baggies, and a small insulated cooler and freezer packs for toting that milk to dinners and on our travel days!
    • Extra bottles! We use glass and one shattered upon arrival…thank God for extras!
    • First Aid kit: children’s tylenol and thermometer were needed and definitely USED!
    • That Aqua Heat travel bottle warmer. That this is Pure GOLD, I tell you!
    • The mosquito net for baby boy. We put this over his rock n’ play every night and every time he was outside!
    • Mesh baby carrier! This thing was awesome for carrying Max out in the sun & water
    • Giant hat for myself. This served as protection for me as well as a tiny umbrella for Max while I was carrying him in the sun!

    NEEDED but forgot:

    • More diapers- we brought 50 diapers and were running very low towards the end of the 8 day trip. Ohhhh newborn life.
    • Beach toys. We thought there would be a basket of sand toys left behind from the previous house guests (usually the case) but there was not. totally should’ve brought a small package of sand toys.
    • Meds- I always pack a first aid kit but I cleaned out some expired meds before the trip and totally forgot to replace them. Luckily I had children’s Tylenol (needed for when Q & A got tummy bug fevers) but I forgot and NEEDED children’s Benedryl and also saline spray and squeeze bulb for baby boy’s congested nose!

    Next up, the trip itself! Here are the details, as promised!

    Location: Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands

    House: Villa Aquamare, via a vacation club we are members of.Virgin Gorda was GORGEOUS and the house was equally as stunning. The staff was superb and all around the experience was a five-star one. Not sure how any other house or beach trip is going to compare to this one! Do me a favor, if you ever go…please hire Chef Mimi to come cook for you…and request her Key Lime pie for dessert. (I don’t even like key lime pie!) Trust Me!

    Tourist Spots:

    On Virgin Gorda-

    • Hog Heaven-BBQ joint. This place is located at the top of the island and the view alone is worth the trek. We stopped here for a drink and a snack (french fries) before heading out to lunch. So I can’t speak much of the actual food, but it’s a total tourist dive spot. Aka: showing up in a bathing suit and cover up is totally acceptable!
    • CocoMaya- Asian Fusion. Gorgeous restaurant, beautiful scenery and yummy food! The girls loved the “back yard” (beach with corn hole, giant jenga, and fire pit) they could play on while we waited for food at our table.
    • Saba Rock. Tiny little rock island off the coast of Virgin Gorda. Good food, cute gift shop, and you can walk the whole island in about 10 minutes. Only negative- no walk-in beach access, since the island is basically a big rock. (Water taxi to get there)
    • The Bitter End Resort. Kind of dated, cute shops, good if you’re looking for some fun water sports. (Can get there by land taxi or boat)
    • Chez Bamboo– a local restaurant. We ordered take-out from here one night and were very underwhelmed by the food. I’d maybe skip it.
    • Rock Cafe– italian restaurant. Cute place, piano bar inside, we ate outside among boulders (thus the name). Food was just ok, but the atmosphere was pretty cool!
    • The Baths! This place was phenomenal! Probably wouldn’t recommend doing it with a baby… but it was worth all the “You guys are crazy” looks we got from everyone! The girls had SO much fun climbing through all the rocks and tunnels and the water and views were just beautiful. Plus, I’m convinced we spotted the Goonies…Sailing Around the BVIs-
    • We did two boat days with our favorite boat captain, Dana Paradise on the Take it Easy 2. We sailed all over the BVIs, stopping to snorkle at The Caves, The Indians and several other hot spots. We hit up Norman Island to eat at Pirate’s Bight, Saba Rock, and Soggy Dollar on Jost Van Dyke. Boat days are kind of our favorite…and not just because of the rum punch! 😉
    • Side Note: On our first day at sea, one of the boat crew heard the girls talking about their love for Moana. The second day we chartered the boat, she went out into the caves she knew we’d be snorkeling in and planted a special gift for the girls to find. When the girls went out snorkeling in the caves they found plastic bags with their names on them. Inside was a note “from Moana” along with handmade  island skirts and flowers for their hair. The girls were completely awe-struck and wore their custom made outfits from Moana for the rest of the day. THAT, my friends, is called quality crew! Miss Alicia, if you ever read this…YOU are the bestest ever! Thank you for making my girls’ day!!!

    2019 Recap

    So we just got back from what might easily be my favorite Caribbean destination!

    Here are a few updates and answers to some of your questions!

    How we Got there:

    This time around we flew from Dallas>Miami (stayed at The 1 Hotel South Beach for 3 days). We then flew to St. Thomas & chartered a water taxi (there is also a ferry) over to Virgin Gorda. It’s definitely a looong day of travel. Last time we flew Dallas>Puerto Rico>Beef Island and then boated over to Virgin Gorda, which is a shorter boat ride but Beef is a much more expensive airport to fly into. We all agreed, in terms of time and cost, that the way we did it THIS year was more practical.

    What We Packed:

    Aside from the normal stuff, we also packed a cardboard box full of “disposable” (meaning it won’t be coming home with us) items, such as diapers, wipes, some snacks for the kids, a few floats/tubes, some cheap water toys, extra sunscreen, etc. We check the box as luggage (Ryan gets to check bags for free since he travels so much for work). If you don’t want to pay for an extra piece of luggage, check with your destination to see if you can ship your “box of disposable goods” to the location and have them hold it for you until you arrive. A note of warning- ship it FAR in advance…mail to the islands is sloooow! Our rationale behind the box, as opposed to just packing another suitcase, is that we use up the contents of the box while on vacation, and then don’t have a big empty suitcase to cart back home with us. We’ve been doing this for years now!

    Where We Stayed:

    We stayed at the same home- Villa Aquamare (It’s one of the locations available through our vacation club, so we book it by using “days” of our membership- it sort of works like a time share). I believe you can rent for cost it without being a member, but at the price, I’d probably recommend looking into some of the cool AirBnB locations on the island!

     

    Where We Ate:

    We visited some of our favorite restaurants on the island mentioned above like Hog Heaven & CocoMaya but also tried out a new spot called Sugar Cane which had amazing food & atmosphere. We were going to try a brand new place called Nova over on Oil Nut Bay, but we got tired that day and decided to order in from Hog Heaven (again!) instead. The other nights we had our “BFF” from last time, Chef Mimi come & cook for us! There’s nothing  quite like showering after a day in the sun and eating a fancy dinner in your pjs!

     

    What We Did:

    -Necker Island: Through our vacation club we were able to book something called an Eco Tour over on the private island. We thought we’d get to see some of the endangered species Richard Branson keeps on the island, get a tour of the property, and then be able to relax on the beach for a bit. We were WRONG! It was a four hour tour of the property- which, don’t get me wrong, was cool to see, BUT…we were not dressed appropriately, not mentally prepared for such a long day, not offered a single thing besides a water bottle, and had FOUR little kiddos in tow! It was a bit of a tease if you ask me. We were made to feel (by our tour guide) like we should be eternally grateful for being allowed to step foot on the island. Listen, Richard Branson has built a pretty freaking spectacular island for himself…but we were all ready to get back to Virgin Gorda where we were allowed to eat, drink, and relax on the beach! It was definitely a “one and done” experience. If you’ve seen the MTV cribs episode, save yourself the trouble (and the four hour “don’t touch anything” tour!)

    -Boat Days are our FAVORITE days so we booked two this year. The companies we used were Virgin Charter YachtsOcean Bliss Charters . Since our group is expanding, we find that catamarans are the way to go for us! A few of the places we visited in 2017 were unfortunately destroyed in the recent storms (but are being rebuilt, don’t worry!!) so we had to skip Saba Rock and The Bitter End Resort this year but we hit up: snorkling at The Caves & The IndiansNorman Island to eat at Pirate’s Bight, and of course, our favorite (and currently rebuilt after the storms:) Soggy Dollar on Jost Van Dyke. We also checked out a new island this year called Cooper Island. It had a great little beach bar/restaurant and the cutest tables in the ocean to hold your drinks for you! My kind of place! 😉

    -The Baths: The Baths of Virgin Gorda might be one of my very favorite places ever!! If you’ve never been, here are a few tips:
    1. Check with locals about Cruise Ship days. Avoid those days- it’s way too packed! Unless of course, you’re on the cruise ship- then, have at it!

    2. Fun Fact: it’s a national park so it’s technically always “open”. We go VERY early to avoid crowds.

    3. Going early means you skip the admission both which opens around 8:30 (I think it’s $5-10 per person) but you most likely won’t have access to the bar/snack hut (which opens around 10-ish…island time 😉) But we like to go early and then stay and swim/hang out on the beach for the whole morning/early afternoon anyways so we get the best of both worlds!

    4. Bring your own water & towels and find a nook outside the caves to leave them while you explore. Wear a fanny pack or backpack with your valuables. You will want to be hands FREE inside the caves.

    5. We found that water shoes made it the rocks feel more slippery, and we all opted for bare feet instead.

    6. Wear a bathing suit or something you don’t mind getting wet!

    7. There is a gift shop & a good restaurant at the top of the park- it’s a great place to hit up on your way out!

    8. If you find the “secret rock” to jump off of into the ocean, leave a comment below for a virtual high five!

    Important:

    Virgin Gorda is in the Britsh Virgin Islands (BVIs) so plan travel documents accordingly. We all needed passports- babies too!! It isn’t a bad idea to travel with a bunch of extra pens as well, since you will need to fill out customs forms, etc. along the way and those places always seem short on pens!

    Tips for a Beach Vacation

    Crazy.

    Insane.

    These are all things I’ve been called after telling people that we are headed to Virgin Gorda next week with our three children- yes, newborn included. I guess they’re all probably pretty true, but here’s the thing: This isn’t our first rodeo! Ryan and I have always loved traveling and after having Q, we took the 8 hour flight over to Hawaii when she was only two months old and we never looked back. We figured out the best and worst ways to travel with a baby (some major bumps and “learning experiences” along the way)! Fast forward a few years to Cubby being born and we were cruising around the Caribbean with another 2 month old in tow. So yeah, we might be totally crazy- but we’re doing it again.  Why? Because we feel like we kind of have this “traveling with kids” thing down pat by now, but mostly because mama needs to have her toes in the water, ass in the sand….and a cold rum punch in her hand! 😉

    Anyways, I’ve been sharing some of my packing over on my Instagram stories and I’ve gotten lots of requests for more info so I figured I’d share a little bit about how we travel with the kiddos, and the products that make it a little bit easier!

    1.  Lists and Schedule: I’m an OCD nut so when we plan a trip the first thing Ryan and I do is sit down and write out a loose day-by-day itinerary. Sure, plans change once we are there, but knowing vaguely what we’ll be doing each day helps me with packing. Then I make a list, and then a list of my list and then a master list of all my lists. 😉 (Lists are your friend.) I make a page for each family member, Ryan excluded (cause he’s a big boy and can pack for himself) and I write down everything I need to pack for that person- even the most obvious things like “underwear” and “toothbrush” make the list, because you KNOW those are the things that always get forgotten!
    2. Pack in advance: Life is pretty damn crazy with three kids, I’m not going to lie. I get little pockets of “free” time each day when I can actually get things done before getting interrupted. So I start shopping/packing weeks in advance. I take out each family member’s suitcase and lay it in the hallway with their list on top. As I do laundry or shop or see an item I know we won’t be needing to use before the trip, I lay it in the suitcase. Then when the time comes to actually pack, most of what I need is already there, and I can use the list to quickly figure out what still needs to be packed. Packing in advance is key!! I’ve had so many people message me about the packing cubes I use to pack for the kids, so I’ve linked them HERE. They really are game-changers!!!

    1. Planning Outfits: So I’m a bit of a nut with dressing the kids. As in, I enjoy it and I like them to coordinate and look put together (most of the time). The only way this is possible for me is if I literally lay out every outfit- bow to shoes. Once I lay out coordinating outfits and suits, I stack them up together (meaning both of the girls’ “Monday” outfits are in a pile together) Since Max is so young and will mostly be wearing onesies and pjs, he’s excluded from the daily outfit piles…for now! 😉 This helps SO much when we are there and the kids are sandy or dripping water everywhere from the bath, and the baby needs to be fed and we are late for dinner reservations- I can literally hand Ryan the “Monday” pile and he can get the kids ready without them winding up wearing two left shoes (which, let’s be honest- is Cubby’s favorite thing to do!)IMG_4369
    2. Plane Entertainment: We reserve ipad time for special occasions so that once on the plane, the kids are actually excited to use them. Before we travel, Ryan let’s the girls pick out a few new movies/tv shows/apps to download onto their ipads. They get really excited about this! Then I let each girl have a backpack. Here are some packs we love!  These are from Herschel and I LOVE them, except they were a bit too small for this trip. I linked them here: Herschel Survey Packsimage3Since this is a longer trip, I grabbed these bigger packs from Pottery Barn Kids. They were on sale for $12…TWELVE!! I don’t believe they are on sale anymore but I linked them HERE for you just in case you want to keep you eye out! Since they were “the same” I let the girls pick out their own key chains to individualize them- they like to feel special like that. Aside from being cute and cheap- these backpacks are the perfect size and have cupholder slots on the sides for the girls water bottles (aka one less thing I have to carry!)image2
      I keep a cabinet in the house that I stock with small toys, books, magnet tin games, etc. that are specifically for travel/restaurant use. Target dollar section is my best friend for this! I let the girls “shop” the closet and decide what they want to pack in their bags. They LOVE doing this and again, it keeps them excited to play once they board the plane. Here’s a peek at some of the things the girls chose for their bags: ipad (obvi!), kleen kanteen water bottle (our fav brand), a school workbook for Q, sticker/coloring books, “Grab & Go” coloring Play Packs (Thanks Target Dollar Section!), Some marshmallow clay (this stuff is awesome), a plain notebook & fresh crayons (always a kiddo favorite!), a small pouch of figurines (Cubby especially loves to play figurines! Q packed some shopkins & Cub packed My Little Ponies), a mini Buddha Board (check this out- you paint with water & it dries and erases!), wiki sticks  (so awesome for travel!) and of course, some of the dreaded “surprise packs” (LOL Dolls anyone?!).  Most of these toys have passed the test of time- meaning they keep the girls occupied for longer than 30 seconds. Anything they get easily board with, doesn’t make the cut!image1
    3. Secret Weapons: Aside from their “quiet bags”, as we call them, here are the secret weapons for traveling with kids: snack, snack, and SNACKS. Seriously, imagine that you are going to be stranded on a deserted island for a month and then pack that much food for your several hour plane ride- trust me. I pack lots of different snacks in small amounts because it’s all about the novelty of “trying a new snack”…with my kids at least. I love using THESE plastic organizers to fill will all different small sized snacks: granola, almonds, m&ms, fruit snacks, goldfish, etc. And don’t forget lollipops or something chewy to help pop those ears during descent!  I also ALWAYS pack a giant gallon sized ziplock (or five) to use as my “trash bag” during the flight. It makes keeping our row not look like a stage-5 disaster zone a little easier.
    4. Travel Clothes: We usually fly super early in the morning so the key to getting out the door is dressing the kids in their travel clothes the night before. Crazy, you say? Not with Plain Jane Play Gowns! These adorable and cozy dresses function as a nightgown BUT are cute enough to pass for a dress! I put these on the girls the night before and lay out a pair of sandals and a jean jacket or cardigan to throw on in the morning. Then I pack an outfit in one of the zip pouches from my packing cube set above that into my carry on. At some point during the flight I get the girls changed into their real clothes and do their hair. Sounds like a lot of work, but in all reality- it kills a good 15 -20 minutes of flight time! 🙂 If you have little girls and you don’t know about Plain Jane…do me a favor and click that link right there!!!     5. Sunscreen: I linked a few of my favorite organic/mineral based sunscreen brands to use on the kids. I’ve used them all and find these brands are the cleanest (chemically speaking), the easiest to use, and work the best. Babo Botanicals, Babyganics, Blue Lizard, Alba  All of these brands have  a spray option (besides Blue Lizard) and I know we are supposed to “stay away from the spray cans”, but let’s be honest- practicality trumps all when dealing with wet, sandy kiddos! What I usually do is apply a thick coat of a lotion sunscreen in the morning and once again mid-day, then I use the spray can for all the in-between coverage! 😉
    6. Items for the Trip:  I’ve been known to ship an item or two to our location in advance…especially when we have a teeny tiny baby. This time, since we are staying at a house, I went ahead and shipped a rock n’ play. It’s Max’s current favorite sleeping apparatus & the pack n’ play they had available just wasn’t going to cut it since it’s not what he’s used to. Plus, I figured the rock n’ play is so light and easy to carry, we can easily cart it down to the beach and then back up the house for naps/bedtime every day! Amazon Prime is my BFF, people. Here are some other items we are bringing. (Sidebar: Most of the time we like to pack any “extra items” (that we know won’t be coming home with us) in a box- this way we aren’t traveling home with extra EMPTY luggage- cause that’s just annoying.

    Aqua Heat

    The only travel bottle warmer I found that didn’t require you to boil water on a stove first or be plugged in for it to work. This one has a warming packet that you add to the water in the base cup. It heats the water and the stainless steel bottle that goes into it. Takes up to 2 minutes to warm the bottle. I am breastfeeding but I’m still not fully comfortable breastfeeding in public (or when sitting next to a stranger) and sometimes when Max is really sleepy he does better with the bottle anyways. So we will be bringing a few packs of breastmilk in a little cooler bag and this warmer will be perfect for on the plane/ on the go! But here’s a little warning: there are “hot” packets which will boil the water and “warm” packets- make sure if you get this for bottles that you ONLY use the “warm” pouches!

    For my little budding photographer. But really, we all have fun snapping polaroids when we are away. I bought some cute little polaroid albums and Q loves collecting all of our snaps. 🙂

  • BabyMoon…?!

    BabyMoon…?!


    So I’ve heard about these things called Babymoons. They belong in the same elusive category as things called “push gifts”, aka a gift you are given by your spouse after “pushing” out a baby. Neither of which belonged in my vocabulary when I first became pregnant with Q and I have to say, neither have been adopted by our family over the years.

    Listen, I am NOT judging here, but for me, a “Babymoon” sounds like an awful lot of work: packing, flying/traveling, finding sitters for older siblings, and carting around an extra, say, 20 pounds…all while sober?! Call me crazy, but I think I’d rather have an “After-Baby Moon”, you feel me?

    All of the above is precisely why we are calling the trip we just returned from: “Our Last Four-ah”.  (see what I did there?)

    Yup, our last little dose of travel as a family of FOUR!!

    Was it relaxing? Nah.

    Peaceful? Nope.

    Exhausting? Yep.

    Worth every last memory made? You betcha.

    So we took the whole “Spring Break” excuse and ran with it…and pretty last minute, too! We are new members of a pretty fun vacation club that allows us access to rentals/villas/units all over the place. All we had to do was plug in the dates a few days before we wanted/needed to leave and any available options popped up. We went with Sea Island, GA mostly because we had never been before, there were lots of activities for the girls to do, and most importantly: short flight.

    We stayed at a property at The Cloister Resort and it was so beautiful. The girls loved that we had our own pool, that we could walk to the beach, and that there was a plethora of shells to collect. Add in a beach playground and a candy/ice cream shop on-site and the girls were pretty much in heaven. We scheduled a kid-friendly fishing expedition and horse-back riding. Both were a huge hit…tied right up there with the candy shop.

    Plus, we were there for St. Patty’s Day so we got to wear our green, make s’mores by the fire pit and chase a real life bag piper around a fancy golf course. It was great fun & I’m pretty sure we are never invited back…

    Aside from the fact that we caught a blue crab, a sting ray, a sea squirter and ZERO actual fish, the girls had a blast “fishing”…

    But, I think they had the most fun at the horseback riding lesson. Thelma & Louise were the sweetest horsies ever, and I was very jealous to be left out of the riding experience. This place was great, they even let the girls feed and brush the horses afterwards. Also, we all want a pony now… (we= me and the kids).

    After our little stint on the East Coast, we went home for about 24 hours, repacked, and headed out to the West Coast. (Unlike our spur of the moment GA trip, this next leg to CA had been planned for months!)


    We started in La Jolla Cove, San Diego at La Valencia Hotel (for those of you who asked on my IG stories!) because Ryan had to make a pit stop there for this little thing called “work”. While he conferenced, the girls and I explored the coast (aka the stinky seals and awesome tide pools), did some shopping in town (it was SUCH a cute town!), and enjoyed plenty of room service.

    PLUS, we even got adventurous & took a road trip up to LA to visit our bestest Insta-friends, @helloerinv & her crew. Our day included wigs, candy, and Q & Lex trying on everything in Lex’s wardrobe. It was pretty much the best day ever…

    After Ryan’s conference, we headed back up the coast and straight to Disneyland to celebrate Cubby’s 3rd birthday. (We planned this trip instead of a birthday party this year.) We met Ryan’s parents, sister, her husband, and their three little girls there and Cub was in birthday bliss all day long! It was an absolutely exhausting good time and I’d do it all over again tomorrow…swollen feet and all!

    After Disney, our entire extended group headed to Newport Beach for a little R&R (after a pit stop at Del Taco, of course).  We all stayed in a house at Pelican Hill Resort and it was so much fun being able to stay in one place together. All five cousins got to cook breakfast with Papa in the mornings and have movies nights together. I love watching the girlies together, especially since we live across the country and don’t get to hang out very often. It’s important that the times we DO get to be together is good quality time!

    After our time in Newport came to and end, we were homeward-bound. That is, until our plane was grounded due to storms and we had to spend one more night in a hotel (sans luggage) before finally getting home the next afternoon. But hey, a little room service in bed never made anyone mad…

    So now we are FINALLY home and ready to settle in and get ready for Baby Boy Mac to arrive.

    I have to be honest with you, I get asked about how we travel with the kids all the time and I’m telling you- these trips TOTALLY kicked my pregnant butt!! It’s three days later I’m still trying to bounce back. Laundry, grocery shopping, unpacking, lunch packing, chauffeuring, cooking, homework-ing, and Easter prepping have my head spinning, I’m not going to lie.

    I’ve found that the best way to handle it all, is to take a nap instead. It’s really working out well for me. 😉

    Maybe I do need a Babymoon after all…location: my bedroom.
